EARL’S MOTOR COURT: THE MOTELS OF ROUTE 66, 'MOTEL OF THE DAY'!

Posted by Simon Cantlon on May 22, 2012 at 9:00am 0 Comments

Located in Winslow, AZ Earl's was originally known as the Marble Motel and was built in the 1940's. It is a classic style mid-centruy motor court and is the oldest operating Route 66 motel in Winslow promoted as the place to go for “Sleeping on the corner in WinslowArizona”.

Postcard from back when Earl's was known as the Marble Motel

Earl's was remodeled and a new facade was added in 1952. The motel's name was then changed to Earl's Motor Court when it was bought by Winslow natives Lee and Floranel Earl in 1974. The Amazing History of the El Rancho Hotel & Motel!

Posted by Simon Cantlon on May 10, 2012 at 9:30am 0 Comments

Located in Gallup, NY the El Rancho Hotel & Motel is a classic motel along Route 66. Opened in 1927 by R.E. Griffith, brother to legendary movie mogul D.W. Griffith. The amazing landscape surrounding it along with the Hollywood connections due to his brother enabled Griffith to turn the El Rancho into a getaway for actors. As many films were filmed in the surrounding landscapes, the El Rancho offered a place for the stars to rest their heads.

The notable guest list from the first 30 years of the motel include Marx Brothers, Errol Flynn, Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy...a movie premiere red carpet worthy list to say the least! Presidents Reagan and Eisenhower have also spent the night beneath the roof of the El Rancho. As a tribute to these former guests the rooms are named after them.

According to legend alcohol flowed like…
